John was drafted on 05 April 1862 after the Confederate Congress passed the Conscription Act of 1862. He reported to camp near New Market, Virginia. He was hospitalized on 22 April 1862 as a result of illness. He died of typhoid fever on 29 May 1862 in a hospital in Staunton.
